The war is over and Don Pedro, Prince of Arragon is due to arrive in Messina with his followers. One of the soldiers, Benedick despises love and makes it clear that he intends to die a bachelor.

His niece Beatrice, like Benedick, is loud in her condemnation of the opposite sex. They indulge in verbal jousting, mocking each other and making clear how much they despise the whole notion of love. Inevitably pride comes before a fall and through the plotting of Don Pedro, Claudio and their host Leonato, Beatrice and Benedick are tricked into falling in love.

Claudio meanwhile has eyes only for Leonato’s daughter Hero and with the help of Don Pedro he wins her love. Don Pedro’s brother the villainous Don John is determined to ruin this love match and he persuades Claudio that Hero is unfaithful. Claudio denounces her at the church on their wedding day and all seems lost. However, with the help of some richly comic characters in the shape of the town watch, the plot is uncovered and
disaster is averted. The wedding is rearranged and this time Benedick asks that the ceremonycan include himself and Beatrice who have finally come to realise how much they mean to one another.
